For decades, El Arroyo lured Austinites downtown with the promise of luscious tacos, burritos and margaritas. But as trendier options popped up, folks needed a reason to keep "The Ditch" part of their weekly routine.
Luckily, the restaurant had a couple of secret weapons: A can't-miss-it location on a one-way route from the highway
and the legendary El Arroyo sign — a kind of Twitter feed for commuters and visitors, only funnier.
¡Aquí está! The El Arroyo Custom Sign Creator allowed people to make and share their very own via text, email and social media.
They could also customize messages with their favorite school or team (or in the case of Longhorn football, religion).
The home page got its own marquee to promote new menu items and special offers, as well as general Ditch-style snarkiness.
¡Y más! Epic Tales of The Ditch (some almost true) along with event calendars, recipes, menu pairings and more tasty stuff.
Por supuesto, an easy-to-navigate menu of legendary El Arroyo goodness, a portal for online orders and a sweet swag store.
The brand's mobile outreach brought Tex-Mex treasures to festivals and parties while drawing more traffic back to the restaurant.
Today, a revitalized Austin brand has a hungry new audience — and many adventures ahead.
